Four years ago, Sean Williams was with his kids at the grocery store when a woman came up to him and commended him for “sticking around” as a dad and taking care of his children. He wasn’t humbled nor happy to be hearing those unsolicited comments. Mainly because he doesn’t like the stereotype circling around that black dads (as he himself calls his group) automatically aren’t an active part of their kids’ lives. And so he created The Dad Gang.

The Dad Gang & Its Place in Society

In a nutshell, the Dad Gang is a place where black dads come together to promote fatherhood and being there for their children. Their goal is to alleviate the archaic stereotype of black dads neglecting their kids and to change the narrative of Black fatherhood into a positive and realistic one. Every dad is welcome to join and can find parenting resources, ‘Stroll with the homies’ events and tours, and unlimited support.

Fatherhood Is a Serious Job

Sean takes fatherhood extremely seriously as that’s the greatest gift any man can get. His mission with Dad Gang (where he is the designated Head-Dad-In-Charge) hasn’t changed since its early days and, if anything, it has earned many new followers in recent times with more than 36,000 Instagram followers and prominent media shedding light on the organization.

The Response

Aside from media attention and support from public figures, Sean’s organization has also enjoyed widespread support from the community, be it white or black. He’s really happy that this new generation of dads are not afraid to educate themselves and not just blindly follow traditional ways. He believes that’s extremely important for raising healthy and happy kids who feel loved and appreciated by their father. Being together on this journey to fatherhood has helped and continues to encourage dads to be and do better.
